State All-Star Water Polo Game Features Three Ann Arbor Players!

By Margaret Baker
Ah, the dream would be to be able to combine the three Ann Arbor high school water polo teams into one. Ann Arbor was well-represented at the recent East Side/West Side All-State game sponsored by the Michigan Water Polo Association and held at East Lansing High School on Sunday, Nov. 13.
The top three players in the state, in fact, hail from all three Ann Arbor high schools.  Senior Jack Staunton (#16), from Skyline took top honors, garnering the MVP for the whole state for the season.  Right behind was senior Gabe Sanchez-Burks (#4)  of Pioneer, and behind him was junior Graham Baker (#15), from Huron’s River Rat Squad.  All three boys serve as captains for their respective high schools. Also playing in the epic season-ending game were Pioneer’s Marton Flautner and Calvin Anderson, and Skyline’s Ben Edlund.
After a rough first quarter, where the East was trying to find their game, the game was close, coming down to a penalty shot in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game. Unfortunately, Baker came up short, and the game ended with the West on top 10-9.  One can only imagine a Sky-Ron-Eer team!

Pioneer’s Gabe Sanchez-Burks, Skyline’s Jack Staunton and Huron’s Graham Baker.
