Cross Country: FGR girls move up all the way MIS – Irish third at Regionals (see WLAA photo gallery)
FGR girls’ cross country coach Jim Spencer just smiled. But at first he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Spencer was walking away from the finish line area at Lake Erie Metropark when a few of his runners came running up to him to tell him the big news. They told Spencer the Irish had finished third and were heading to the State Finals.
“I had us at fifth,” Spencer said.
His team had them at third and heading to MIS for the state finals this Saturday after FGR finished top three at Saturday’s Regional. Tecumseh took first with 44 points and Dearborn Divine Child took second with 50 points. And the Irish finished with 115 points, just three points ahead of Chelsea (118) for the final qualifying spot.
Grosse Ile took fifth (131) and Milan sixth (142).
Sophomore Gianna Hoving was 10th overall in 20:17.0 and junior Izzie Lashaway was 11th in 20:19.5 to help lead the Irish.
