Boys Cross Country: Pioneers outrun Saline to first place at Division 1 Regionals (see WLAA photo gallery)
No Nick Foster – no problem for the Pioneer boys’ cross country.
Foster, the two-time defending state champion, and his talented class of runners graduated last year leaving Pioneer looking for some replacements. Well, there was no rebuilding at Pioneer, just reloading and the new-look Pioneers kept pace with the program’s incredible past.
Pioneer had four runners in the top 10 and edged Saline by three points for first place at Saturday’s Division 1 Regional at Lake Erie Metropark. The Pioneers scored 40 points while the Hornets buzzed in at second with 43 points. Dearborn finished third (105) to also qualify for Saturday’s State Finals at MIS in Brooklyn.
Pioneer was led by sophomore Owen Johnson (fourth, 16:05.70), sophomore Henry Monte Sano (fifth, 16:07.54) and junior Ben Jakabcsin (sixth, 16:26.60). Junior Max Klarman was ninth in 16:33.41.
Senior Drew Allen ran 16th in 16:41.09 and senior Owen Rennich was 17th in 16:49.34. Sophomore Matt Ruud was 25th in 17:10.61.
