Water Polo: Skyline finishes fifth in the state
The Skyline Men’s Water Polo team finished fifth in the State this past weekend at the State Tournament hosted at Jenison High School.
The Eagles lost a hard-fought game against Jenison Friday night by the score of 15-11, to be placed in the bottom half of the tournament bracket. The game was tight throughout, widening a bit at the end with an open net goal.
On Saturday morning Skyline defeated a tough Birmingham Seaholm squad 8-6. Seaholm came ready to play, but the Senior duo of Ben Edlund and Jack Staunton would not be denied, with Edlund recording 6 goals, 2 exclusions earned, and 2 steals, while Staunton added 2 goals, an assist, 4 exclusions earned, and 9 steals to the effort. Matthew Christansen recorded 8 saves in the victory.
On Saturday afternoon, in their final match, the Eagles beat Birmingham Groves 15-11. Goal scoring was led by Staunton with 7, with Edlund adding 4, Sawyer Thompson chipping in 3, and Owen McKelvey adding 1. Connor Zillich led the way with 4 assists, with McKelvey (3), Edlund (2), Thompson (1) and Ogi Vassilev (1) assisting as well. Skyline was a turnover-creating machine in the game, with McKelvey (6), Staunton (5), Edlund (4), Christiansen (2), Andi Xi (2), Thompson (1), and Zillich (1) notching steals. And at the goal, Christiansen recorded 5 saves, while Zillich had a field block for the defense.
