Volleyball: Skyline sweeps Huron to win city title for the third straight year

The Skyline Eagles hosted crosstown rival Huron last Monday night. The SEC Red Division match-up proved to be another opportunity for the Eagles to claim the title of City Champs for the third straight year.
The Eagles proved to be a dominate force and swept the River Rats 25-9, 25-14, 25-18.
The first set proved the Eagles were more than ready to play against the River Rats. Skyline flew out to a 14-0 lead behind multiple assists and kills from senior Stacie Warner to senior Kendal Murray, freshmen Harper Murray, and sophomore Sophie Schrag.
Harper Murray highlighted the 14 point run with 4 of her 14 aces of the evening. Huron would score their first point of the evening on an attempted kill by Skyline that went out of bounds.
Skyline would go on another run of five consecutive points behind the offensive and defensive play of junior Sasha Akuezue and offensive play of Schrag to open Skyline’s lead to 18-2.
The Eagles scored six aces in set number one. The Eagles won the first set 25-9 after Huron’s serve flew out of bounds.
The River Rats kept set number two close early. Huron stayed within three points with Skyline leading 10-7. Then Harper Murray’s dialed up six consecutive aces putting Skyline ahead 16-7.
Kendal Murray would get in on the action and score on a kill to the back line of the court. Huron stopped the seven-point run with a tip to the center of the court. Huron would go on to score seven more points highlighted by several kills and a couple of tips.
The Eagles proved to be a formidable opponent and won the second set 25-14 on an assist from Kendal Murray to Sophie Schrag.
The Eagles started the third set with Harper Murray serving. Once again, the River Rats could not handle her serve as she served two consecutive aces, setting Skyline out to a 2-0 lead. Huron would stay within a three point lead as they blocked an attempted kill, closing the lead to 7-4.
Skyline would score six consecutive points highlighted by multiple assists from Warner to Akuezue, Claire Davis, Harper Murray, and an ace from Kendal Murray, opening their lead to 13-4. Huron would score on several kills and take advantage of several mishandled passes by the Eagles. Skyline took advantage of a tremendous Akuezue block at center net as Skyline maintained a 20-10 lead.
Skyline eventually won the third set 25-17 on a block by Kendal Murray.
The Eagles will host Temperance Bedford for another SEC Red Division match-up on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. The Eagles will celebrate Senior Night and set their sights on what is expected to be a competitive match against the Kicking Mules.
