Volleyball: Skyline aces first SEC test with win over Pioneer (see WLAA photogallery)

While there were no fans in the stands, there was plenty of intensity on the court as Pioneer hosted crosstown rival Skyline in an SEC volleyball match on Tuesday night.

The Eagles, who flew into the game as one of the best teams in the state, are ranked sixth by Prepdig with MHSAA rankings expected out soon.

The Pioneers weren’t impressed and made the visitors work for every point. This was a rivalry game after all where there are no gimmies allowed.

Skyline, however, set the pace early and took the first game rather easily 25-12.

But Pioneer played much better in the next two games as the Eagles were forced to up their game against the team in purple. The Eagles took game two 25-21 and then finished off the Pioneers with a 25-22 win in game three.

Skyline improves to 4-0 on the season. They opened the year with a five-set victory over No. 5 ranked Lake Orion. Other wins have come against Lakeland and Birch Run.

The Eagles play Saturday at Northville in a quad-match.

Pioneer plays at Ypsilanti on Thursday (Sept. 24).
