Volleyball: Pioneer continuing to improve behind strong senior leadership
Melissa Hosman says the Pioneer volleyball team is “still working on finding our true game speed.” The interim varsity coach saw plenty of positives on Tuesday night despite falling to Monroe in three sets.
The Trojans scored a 25-18, 25-19, 25-16 win over the Pioneers in an SEC dual-match.
“Our ‘front line’ (hitters) found their groove at the net,” said Hosman. “We still have some fine tuning to do on our serve receive and defense.”
Several of the Pioneer players stepped up with strong games including senior Sadie Freisthler (5 kills, 6 points), freshman Yuzuki Fujita (7 kills, 12 points) and senior Reilly Andrews (12 assists).
Led by “four amazing seniors,” the Pioneers have yet to reach their full potential. They are led by seniors Mae Veidlinger (defensive specialist), Freisthler (right side hitter), Andrews (setter) and Carissa Hawkins (outside hitter) along with junior Elle Denzin (all-around player).
Top incoming players include freshman Fujita (all-around player) and sophomore Molly Banta (Middle Hitter).
“These girls WILL be a force to be reckoned with by the time Districts roll around,” says Hosman. “They all display great team work and a love of the game. We just need to continue to build on confidence and trust.”
