The Guild of Artists & Artisans with Gutman Gallery Announce Folklore

ANN ARBOR – The Guild of Artists & Artisans (The Guild) announces its latest exhibition, Folklore, an all media show in Gutman Gallery themed around storytelling, superstitions, and old wives’ tales. The exhibition will be on display September 23 – October 29, 2022, and the gallery will be open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am – 5 pm.

The community is invited to help kick off Folklore with an open house style reception on Friday, September 23 from 4p-6p. Stop by the gallery to experience the show firsthand, meet some of the artists, and enjoy music from Golden Feelings. Follow along on our Facebook page for reception details, exhibition updates, and artwork highlights.

Folklore was juried by guest juror, Jeff Cancelosi, Detroit-based artist, curator, and photographer. The exhibition features 30 works from 26 talented artists, representing a variety of styles, techniques, and media. Among these works, the show includes a flame-worked glass, found wood, and cast concrete sculpture based on Russian folklore from David Fischer, an oil painting influenced by Odin’s Ravens by Martine MacDonald, and a digital art piece from Melanie Formica that explores the Eastern European story of Krampus.

Another featured artist, Kate Neville, talks about her ceramic sculpture, “Cairn #7: Koi Trail,” saying, “This original ceramic sculpture is comprised of six rocks balancing a simple koi fish. The sculpture is supported by a welded steel support and sits approximately 24 inches tall. Each rock is glazed to replicate the colors and textures found in nature. The koi fish sits on top of this cairn as a guide on your path to strength. As folklore has it a school of koi fish battled against the strong current of the Yellow River, becoming stronger and stronger. When they finally won the battle and reached their goal, the Gods rewarded them and turned them into a beautiful golden dragon.”

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, Artist Pop-Ups will continue on Saturdays in Gutman Gallery.

Art-lovers are invited to visit the gallery on Saturdays to meet the artists behind the work and shop a wider variety of their art. Different gallery artists will be setting up shop each Saturday from 11a-5p.

Follow along on Facebook and Instagram, where we will announce the line-up each week!

The Guild continues to take measures to create a safe and comfortable environment for its community of artists and art-lovers. At this time, The Guild recommends masks in the gallery, but does not require them. Hand sanitizer stations, courtesy of Mammoth Distilling, are set up throughout the gallery, surfaces are wiped down regularly, and touchless payments are an option for all transactions.

Gutman Gallery is thankful to its donors and community partners whose support makes this and other programs possible. A special thank you to our community partners: Vic Gutman & Associates, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority, Mammoth Distilling, and Dollar Bill Printing.
