Tennis: Pioneer, Huron land in top six at Division 1 State Finals

Ann Arbor sent all three teams to the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals last week at Kalamazoo College/WMU and two netted top-six finishes in a very competitive field. Troy finished first with 30 points followed by Bloomfield Hills (26), Northville (23) and Novi (21).

Pioneer finished with 17 points and finished fifth while Huron scored 12 points and placed sixth. Skyline finished with six points and tied for 13th place.

At one singles, both Huron’s Andy Andea and Pioneer’s Isaac Herrenkohl reached the quarterfinals. Andea, a junior, won his first two matches before falling to Bloomfield Hills’ Noah Roslin 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Herrenkohl had a first-round bye and then won his next match before falling to Northville’s Sachiv Kumar 6-2, 7-5.

Pioneer’s Corin Tang reached the quarterfinals at two singles before falling 6-0, 6-2 to Troy’s Derek Blackwell.

At three singles, Pioneer’s Noah Vogel went all the way to the championship match before losing 6-1, 6-0 in the finals to Pierce Shaya of Bloomfield Hills. A senior, Vogel finished the season with a 24-2 record.

Pioneer’s Aditya Abbaraju reached the quarterfinals at four singles before falling 6-2, 7-5 to Hudsonville’s Sam Lyon. Abbaraju had a bye and then won his second-round match 6-2, 6-1.

Huron’s one doubles team of Rishab Jayaraman and Aarnav Unadkat reached the semifinals before falling 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 to Troy. The Huron duo won their quarterfinal match 7-5, 6-3 over the team from Bloomfield Hills.

Pioneer’s two doubles team of Carson Strauss and David Lee lost 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals to the team from Novi. The Pioneer duo beat Rochester Hills in an earlier match.

Huron’s three doubles team of Hassan Hejazi and Eric Heng won their first four matches before falling 4-6, 6-2, -3 in the finals to the team from Troy. The River Rats team won in the quarterfinals (6-0, 7-6(2) over Rochester Hills and in the semifinals (7-6(2), 7-5) over the team from Rockford (7-6 (2), 7-5). Pioneer’s three doubles team of Kyler Heise and Gabriel Rodgers reached the semifinals before falling 7-5, 6-3. They won their quarterfinal match 6-1, 7-6 (4) over Rochester Adams.

At four doubles, Pioneer’s team of Ian Hajra and David Loh reached the quarterfinals before falling 6-4, 6-2 to the team from Bloomfield Hills. The Pioneer team advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the team from Catholic Central.
