Tennis: Ann Arbor’s top singles players qualify for state tournament
The top eight singles players in the state met in the Division 1 Boys’ Tennis Singles Finals on Wednesday at Okemos High School. Among the top eight were the one singles players from Huron, Pioneer and Skyline – three of the eight, not bad.
Unfortunately, all three went out in the first round against some very strong competition.
Skyline’s Anthony Van Oyen, only a sophomore, came in as the eighth seed and had the difficult challenge of facing the tournament’s top seed in Gabe Brown. The Troy Athens’ top singles player won 6-4, 6-0.
Pioneer’s Stanley Rhodes entered as the sixth seed and faced third-seed Noah Roslin of Bloomfield Hills. Roslin advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
Huron senior Angie Zhou was seeded seventh in the tournament and drew Okemos’ Joshua Portnoy, the second seed. Portnoy won 6-0, 6-0.
The semifinals and finals are scheduled for today (Oct. 22).
