Tennis: Ann Arbor schools dominate Regionals – head to states
The Ann Arbor schools took center court and center stage last week at the MHSAA Division 1 Regional hosted by Pioneer. The Pioneers finished first overall with 14 points while Huron was a close second with 12 points and Skyline a close third with 11 points.
Skyline finished fourth with nine points while Monroe, Woodhaven and Belleville failed to net a single point in the tough Regional.
All three Ann Arbor schools earned a spot in the D-1 State Finals which begin Thursday at Kalamazoo College and WMU with the finals scheduled for Friday.
Okemos is the defending state champs. Huron and Pioneer tied for the title in 2019.
At one singles, Skyline’s Anthony Van Oyen defeated Pioneer’s Isaac Herrenkohl 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in the finals.
At two singles, Pioneer’s Corin Tang defeated Huron’s Nick Pauken 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the finals.
At three singles, Pioneer’s Noah Vogel defeated Skyline’s Arya Joshi 6-1, 6-2.
At four singles, Saline’s Mikaal Hamid defeated Pioneer’s Aditya Abbaraju 6-2, 1-0.
Huron’s number one doubles team of Rishab Jayaraman and Aarnav Unadkat defeated Pioneer’s team of Shankrith Chandru and Will Castanier 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
In the two doubles final, Pioneer’s team of Carson Strauss and David Lee won 6-0, 6-4 over Huron’s team of Ajay Dass and Ahmed Hejazi.
Pioneer’s three doubles team of Kyler Heise and Gabriel Rodgers defeated Huron’s team of Eric Heng and Hassan Hejazi 6-4, 6-4 in the finals.
In four doubles, Pioneer’s team of Ian Hajra and David Loh won 6-3, 6-0 over Huron’s team of Emmett Shaw and Andrew van der Velde.
