Swimming: Wilkening breaks own varsity record as Pioneers dunk U-D Jesuit
The Pioneer boys’ swimming and diving team hosted UD Jesuit on Jan. 15 and scored another dual-meet victory to remain undefeated on the season. Jack Wilkening broke his own varsity record in the 100 backstroke during another impressive evening for the Pioneers.
Pioneer dunked UD Jesuit 129-51 in the non-league meet.
The Pioneer team of Wilkening, Alex Farmer, Robert Yang and Gabriel Burks got things swimming in the right direction with a winning time of 1 minute, 36.04 seconds in the medley relay.
Pioneer took the top three spots in the 200 free with Teodor Jaworski first (1:45.02), Alec Lipham second (1:45.89) and Harrison Sanders third (1:45.93).
Ryan Hume won the 200 IM in 1:54.70 for the Pioneers. Christopher Leuciuc was third (1:58.60) and Caleb Rice fourth (1:58.66) for Pioneer.
Wilkening touched second in a close 50 free race with a time of 21.71. U-D’s Charlie Bruce was first in 21.54 and Burks was third for Pioneer in 21.86 as less than a second separated the top three spots. Yang was fourth (22.38) and Jenson Wood fifth (22.96) for Pioneer.
Pioneer’s Gabe Mercier won the diving with 212.10 points.
Pioneer went one-two in the butterfly with Yang first (52.04) and Justin Su second (53.92).
Hume won his second individual race of the meet when he touched first in the 100 free with a time of 47.63. Harrison Sanders was third (48.99), Burks was fourth (49.59) and Leuciuc fifth (49.61) for Pioneer.
The Pioneers went one-two in the 500 free with Jaworski first (4:47.08) and Jensen Wood second (5:00.82).
Pioneer went one-two in the 200 free relay. The team Burks, Farmer, Sanders and Hume touched first in 1:27.40 followed by the team of Su, Lipham, Leuciuc and Jaworski (1:31.74).
Wilkening broke his own varsity record with a time of 50.60 to win the backstroke. Rice was third in 54.23.
Pioneer took the top three spots in the breaststroke with Farmer first (1:01.00), Young Jun second (1:03.80) and Almeida third (1:03.91).
The Pioneer team of Yang, Hume, Jaworski and Wilkening won the 400 free relay in 3:13.55. The team of Leuciuc, Su, Sanders and Rice touched second in 3:16.41.
