Swimming: Skyline races past Saline in SEC Red showdown
The Skyline boys’ swimming and diving team faced an early season test on Tuesday night and while there is always room for improvement – as coaches like to say – the Eagles certainly passed with flying colors. Skyline scored an impressive 108-78 victory over the visiting Saline Hornets in an SEC Red dual-meet.
Skyline improved to 2-0 on the young season. Another big test awaits the Eagles on Tuesday when they travel to defending state champion Pioneer for a dual-meet with their crosstown rivals.
The Eagles opened with a win in the medley relay as the team of Chris Kurniawan, Daniel Osterholzer, Lucas Caswell and Ian Root touched first in 1 minute, 42.08 seconds. The team of Owen McKelvey, Jack Staunton, Owen Torres and Zander Barr was third.
Senior Evan McKelvey won the 200 free in 1:47.05 while Ben Edlund was third (1:56.12) and Owen Schadler fourth (2:00.20).
Skyline went one-two in the IM with senior Ben Kurniawan first (1:57.29) and Caswell second (2:05.92).
Skyline also took the top two spots in the 50 free with Matthew Lee first (21.32 seconds) and Staunton second (22.74).
Skyline freshman Stuart Knight was second in diving with 189.30 points.
Ben Kurniawan won his second race when he touched first in the butterfly in 51.62. Caswell was third (53.92) for Skyline.
The Eagles took the top two spots in the 100 free with Lee first in 47.83 and Evan McKelvey second in 47.96.
Schadler was second in the 500 free in 5:14.61.
The Skyline foursome of Evan McKelvey, Staunton, Lee and Ben Kurniawan won the 200 free relay in 1:28.49. The Eagles team of Edlund, Osterholzer, Root and Sawyer Thompson was second in 1:37.63.
In the backstroke, Chris Kurniawan was second (59.09), Coleson Probst was third (59.90) and Owen McKelvey was fourth (59.91).
Staunton was second (1:02.62) and Osterholzer third (1:02.69) in the breaststroke.
The Eagles finished the night with a win in the 400 free relay. The team of Evan McKelvey, Caswell, Lee and Ben Kurniawan won in 3:16.73.
