Swimming: Skyline puts on an impressive show at Brighton meet
The Skyline boys’ swimming and diving team headed up US-23 on Saturday morning for a chance to compete, win a few races and drop some time on the stopwatch – and that’s exactly what the Eagles accomplished at the Brighton High School Quad meet with the host Bulldogs, Skyline Eagles, Midland Dow and Pinckney Pirates.
Skyline swept the day, beating Pinckney (128-58), Midland Dow (113-72) and Brighton (108-78).
The meet started out splashingly fantastic for the Eagles who landed first in the medley relay. The team of Ben Deininger, Daniel Osterholzer, Ben Kurniawan and Evan McKelvey touched first in 1 minute, 39.01 seconds. The Skyline team of Chris Kurniawan, Conor Pyle, John Evangelista and Jack Staunton took fourth in 1:46.27.
McKelvey jumped right back into the water and took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.23. Daniel Koselka was fifth (1:55.91) and Andrew Xi was eighth (1:56.59) for the Eagles.
Ben Kurniawan was the overall winner in the 200 IM. He touched first with a time of 2:01.53. Deininger was third (2:08.31) and Pyle fifth (2:12.62) for Skyline.
The Eagles went five-six in the 50 free with Staunton (23.44 seconds) and Lucas Caswell (23.62).
Skyline’s Charlie Andrew-Vaughan scored 185.60 points to take second in diving. Teammate Soren Nielsen was fifth (150.30).
Ben Kurniawan continued his amazing day with his third first-place finish and second individual victory with a time of 52.05 in the 100 butterfly. Chris Kurniawan was fifth (56.94) and Evangelista was seventh (1:00.92) for Skyline.
McKelvey, who took silver in the 200 free, took gold in the 100 free with his winning time of 48.75. Koselka was fifth (52.06), Owen Schadler was seventh (55.00) and Ben Edlund eighth (55.15) for the Eagles.
Skyline had an impressive showing in the 500 free as Caswell took first (5:09.85) and Xi was second (5:17.33). Nielsen was eighth in 5:47.67.
The Skyline team of Koselka, Chris Kurniawan, Staunton and Caswell took third in the 200 free relay in 1:32.65. The foursome of Osterholzer, Edlund, Evangelista and Xi were fifth in 1:39.58.
In the backstroke, Deininger was second (56.22), Chris Kurniawan was third (58.61) and Schadler was ninth (1:06.28).
The Eagles landed in four spots among the top six in the breaststroke with Osterholzer third (1:03.19), Staunton fourth (1:03.62), Pyle fifth (1:03.85) and Lewis McCammon sixth (1:07.56).
The Eagles took second in the 400 free relay. The team of McKelvey, Caswell, Deininger and Chris Kurniawan finished in 3:20.15 – just behind Brighton (3:19.62) in a competitive final race of the meet.
