Swimming Preview: River Rats ready to roll against tough SEC Red

While Pioneer and Skyline have some big expectations for the 2020 boys’ swimming and diving season, let’s not forget Huron. The River Rats dive into the season with a pool full of talent and goals of their own.

“Our upperclassmen leadership is great and we are excited about this season,” says Huron Head Coach Eric Stanczyk. “They set a great tone for training as well as at meets competing.”

The SEC Red Division is always among the top leagues in the state when it comes to swimming and this year is no different.

“We would love to try and move up in the SEC Red standings this season and see how we stack up at the state level,” Stanczyk says.

Leading the way is a trio of talented swimmers who qualified for the state finals last year. They are all looking for a chance to qualify again and this year actually compete among the best in the state.

Seniors Eli Atkinson (state cuts in the 200 IM & 100 Free), AJ Stewart (state cuts in the 50 free & 100 fly) and junior Drew Lindstrom (state cut in the 500 free) lead a talented Huron team into the pool this year.

Huron went 7-6 in finished fourth in last year’s competitive SEC Red.

The 2021 captains are Atkinson, Stewart and Tyler Gibbs.

Huron opens the season on Thursday against visiting Ypsilanti.
