Swimming: Pioneers race past Skyline in SEC dual-meet

The Pioneer boys’ swimming and diving team continues to show that they are at a different level than most (all?) teams in the state. The Pioneers knocked off a strong Skyline team on Thursday night 133-52 as they won every individual race except the 100 fly and backstroke.

Pioneer also added two more state-cut times to the list: Harrison Sanders in 100 free with a time of 48.88; and Anthony Gibbons in 100 breast with a time of 59.70. Last week, Alex Farmer earned his state cuts against Bedford in the 50 and 100 free.

The Pioneer team of Jack Wilkening, Gibbons, Robert Yang and Matthew Segal took first place in the opening medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 35.97 seconds. The Skyline team of Ben Deininger, Daniel Osterholzer, Chris Kurniawan and Evan McKelvey took second in 1:40.31.

Junior Teodor Jaworski took first for Pioneer in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.81. Skyline’s Ben Kurniawan was second in 1:47.74 and Farmer took third for the Pioneers in 1:51.39.

Segal, a senior, won the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.18 with teammates Cameron Williston second (2:01.08) and Caleb Rice third (2:01.50).

Pioneer took the top four spots in the 50 free: junior Ryan Hume was first (22.35 seconds), Yang was second (22.61), Sanders third (22.68) and Jack Shemke fourth (23.20). Deininger was fifth for Skyline in 23.28.

Pioneer went one-two in diving with senior Cole Tremewan first (281.20 points) and Max Rolla-Mullis second (190.55). Skyline’s Charlie Andrew-Vaughan was third (148.95) and Soren Nielsen fourth (135.65).

Ben Kurniawan, a junior, won the butterfly in 51.94 for the Eagles. Yang was second (52.18) and Justin Su third (54.38) for the Pioneers. Skyline’s Gabriel Labadie was fifth (58.85) and Pioneer’s Samuel Fonte sixth (59.47).

In the 100 free, Hume, a junior, touched first in 48.58 to lead a Pioneer four-swimmer sweep at the top of the finish line. Sanders was second (48.88) and Pioneer teammates Gabriel Burks and Wilkening tied for third in 49.83. Daniel Koselka was fifth for the Eagles in 50.66.

Segal returned to the winner’s circle with a first-place finish time of 4:44.98 in the 500 free. Williston touched second (4:48.31) and Alec Lipham third (5:04.15) for Pioneer. Andrew Xi was fourth for Skyline in 5:08.34.

The Pioneers dominated the 200 free relay taking the top three spots. Rice, Yang, Hume and Wilkening were first (1:29.05); Jaworski, Farmer, Sanders and Jensen Wood were second (1:31.11); and Burks, Shemke, Labadie and Williston were third (1:31.81).

Freshman Chris Kurniawan won the backstroke in 55.97 for the Eagles. Three Pioneers touched the wall next with Rice second (56.22), Jaworski third (59.40) and Matthew DeBona fourth (1:00.21). Skyline’s Coleson Probst was fifth (1:01.95).

The Pioneers went one-two in the breaststroke with Gibbons first (59.70) and Sung-Jae Lee second (1:01.61). Osterholzer was third (1:02.88) and Jack Staunton fourth (1:02.96) for Skyline.

Pioneer again won the top three spots in the 400 free relay. The team of Williston, Sanders, Jaworski and Segal took first in 3:12.84. The team of Shemke, Su, Fonte and Burcks were second in 3:24.40. And the team of Lipham, Labadie, Wood and Farmer took third in 3:26.33. Skyline’s team of Ben Kurniawan, Koselka, Ben Edlund and Chris Kurniawan took fourth in 3:31.92.
