Swimming: Pioneers race past Bedford in SEC Red dual-meet
The Pioneer boys’ swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 on the young season with an easy 142-43 win over Bedford in an SEC Red Division dual-meet on Thursday night. The Pioneers won all but one individual race and swept the three relays.
Pioneer took the top five spots in the medley relay – it was a long night for the Kicking Mules. But it’s going to be a long night for many teams when they splash it up with one of the best teams in the state.
The team of Jack Wilkening, Anthony Gibbons, Justin Su and Robert Yang took first in the medley relay in 1 minute, 39.93 seconds. Pioneer’s team of Teodor Jaworski, Samuel Fonte, Gabriel Labadie and Gabriel Burks took second in 1:46.15.
Senior Matthew Segal raced to a first-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.54. Ryan Hume was second (1:45.26) and Caleb Rice was third (1:47.31).
Cameron Williston, another talented senior, touched first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.73. Anthony Gibbons was third (2:10.60) and Gabriel Almeida was fourth (2:10.77).
Pioneer took the top three spots in the 50 freestyle with Wilkening in first place (22.08 seconds), Yang second (22.31) and Alex Farmer third (22.36).
Cole Tremewan won the diving with 280.35 points and Gabriel Mercier was second with 193.55 points for Pioneer.
Yang touched first in the butterfly with a time of 52.45 followed by Segal in 53.75. Su took fourth for the Pioneers with a time of 55.19.
In the 100 free, Farmer took second in 49.11 with Wilkening third (50.12), Harrison Sanders fourth (50.32) and Gabriel Burks fifth (51.89).
Hume led a sweep in the 500 free as he touched first in 4:51.32. Rice was second (4:59.04) and Alec Lipham third (5:11.17).
The 200 free relay team of Segal, Farmer, Hume and Rice won in 1:28.49.
Williston took first in the backstroke in 56.34 followed by Teodor Jaworski in 58.03.
Gibbons went 1:02.78 to take first and lead a Pioneer sweep in the breaststroke. Sung-Jae Lee was second (1:03.55) and Almeida was third (1:04.05).
In the 400 free relay, the team of Segal, Farmer, Hume and Williston took first in 3:12.73. The team of Rice, Yang, Sanders and Labadie took second in 3:23.52.
