Swimming: Huron tops Monroe, Adrian (see WLAA photo gallery – 80 photos)

The Huron River Rats Girls’ Swim/Dive team kicked off their regular season Thursday night with a double victory over Monroe (123-38) and Adrian (118-56). Other than Adrian’s Emily Hess, who took two events—the 200 Free (2:02.23) and the 500 Free (5:28.01), and Monroe’s Meredith Soule, the 100 free (56.75), all the event winners were River Rats.
Huron’s “A” medley relay (junior Sawako Sakamoto, senior/captain Emma Kaipainen, sophomore Ece Uyulur, and senior/captain Zannah Baker) opened the meet with an easy victory (1:57.52), and in the 200 Free, seniors Kathryn Hemmila (2:04.19), Ezgi Poyraz (2:17.97), and sophomore Shayla Pawlicki took 2nd, 4th and 5th place points. S. Sakamoto won the 200 IM handily (2:22.35), and freshman Maya Sudhan (3:15.05) scored in 5th. Baker (25.63) and Kaipainen (26.19) were 1st and 3rd in the 50, with senior Felicia Sang (31.82) in 5th, and Huron took 1st-4th places in the 100 Fly: Hemmila (1:14.21), senior/captain Cali Streeter (1:14.29), senior Ayaka Sakamoto (1:20.73), and senior Margo Leone (1:21.28). Kaipainen (57.26) and Uyulur (1:00.80) went 2, 3 in the 100 Free, with junior Lucy Schneidewind finishing 5th (1:07.89).

In the 500 free, senior Ezgi Poyraz (6:03.66), sophomore Shayla Pawlicki (6:20.49) and senior Ali Sutton (7:12.85), were 3rd, 4th and 5th, respectively; S. Sakamoto (1:03.61), M Leone (1:15.58) and junior Hannah Burmann (1:22.70) were 1st, 3rd and 5th in the 100 back, and Z. Baker (1:15.38), Uyulur (1:20.16) and Streeter (1:21.59) were 1st, 3rd and 4th in the 100 Breast.
Rounding out the relays, Huron’s “A” 200 Free (Kaipainen, S Sakamoto, Hemmila, and Baker) took 1st (1:43.96), and the “A” 400 Free, (Hemmila, Poyraz, Schneidewind, and A. Sakamoto) also gained the win (4:19.50).
Huron travels to Lincoln on Tuesday, Sept. 14th for a 6 pm dual meet.
