Swimming: Huron sweeps tri-meet with SEC foes
By Margaret Baker
It was another steamy day at the Huron Ratatorium on Saturday, Sept. 14, with lots of great swimming and diving, as the River Rats hosted Pinckey, Chelsea and Temperance-Bedford for a Quad Meet. The meet was scored as six separate meets, and Huron won all three of their contests, over Bedford 118-65, over Pinckney, 145-37, and over Chelsea 103-83.
Junior Annie Costello (283.15) led a contingent of Huron divers placing 1st through 4th. In addition to Annie, junior Julie Park (217.35), freshman Hannah Margolis (185.80), and senior Sami Ruud (182/35) all achieved dual meet wins, putting them only one dual meet win away from qualifying for the diving regionals this season. Freshman Maggie Thomas (146.65) and senior Anna Boerst (143.40) also registered dual meet wins. It was a great effort by all on the board.
In the swimming competition, Huron’s speedy sprinters took both the 200 Medley relay (1:53:56), with juniors Emily Tran, Annaliese Streeter, and Clara Bowman, and sophomore Zannah Baker, and the 200 Free relay (1:42:49), just shy of the D1 state cut, with Tran, sophomore Kathryn Hemmila, Z. Baker, and A. Streeter. They were second to Chelsea’s Bella Turner, Kauri Fields, Olivia Prodin and Rory Krause in the 400 Free, as their team of sophomores Hemmila, Ezgi Poyraz and Felicia Sang, and senior Anna Leone touche in 4:40:67.
Tran took home her D1 cut in the 100 back (59.58), and A. Streeter (1:05:91) in the 100 Breast, while two other swimmers—Z. Baker in the 100 Free (57.68) and A. Leone in the 100 Breast (1:11:50)—earned MISCA cuts for their efforts.
Other top six finishers for the Rats included, in the 200 free: Hemmila, 4th (2:08.62), and sophomore Ezgi Poyraz, 5th (2:10:70); in the 200 IM, sophomore Ayaka Sakamoto, 5th (2:32.71); in the 50 Free, Z. Baker, 4th (25.66) and freshman Catherine Li, 5th (27.55); in the 100 Fly, sophomore Felicia Sang, 3rd (1:08.01), and Bowman, 4th (1:08.60); in the 100 Free, sophomore Emma Kaipainen, 6th (1:02.02); in the 500 Free, Poyraz, 2nd (5:46.69); in the 100 Back, Bowman, 2nd (1:06.59), C. Li, 5th (1:09.18), and Hemmila, 6th (1:11.18); and in the 100 Breast, Sakamoto, 5th (1:16.05).
The Rats have a week off, then will go to Pioneer Thursday, Sept. 26. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
