Swimming: Huron records plenty of strong swims despite loss to Dexter

The Huron girls’ swimming and diving team hosted Dexter on Thursday at the Ratatorium and fell to the talented Dreadnaughts 103-80 in an SEC Red dual-meet.

There were many great swims for the Rats, starting with the “A” team (sophomore Sawako Sakamoto, and senior/captains Emma Kaipainen, Cali Streeter, and Zannah Baker) taking 1st in the 200 Medley Relay (2:00.66) and the “B” (seniors Margo Leone and Ayaka Sakamoto, and sophomores Shayla Pawlicki and Lucy Schneidewind) taking 3rd (2:13.87).

Captain Baker won both her events, the 50 Free (25.12) and the 100 Free (56.74), while Captain Kaipainen took 1st in the 200 IM (2:19.28) and 2nd in the 100 Breast (1:11.66) just behind Dexter’s Delaney Parker (1:10.99).

Other Huron event winners were S. Sakamoto in the 100 Fly (1:03.91) and the 100 Back (1:01.84); senior Kathryn Hemmila in the 500 Free (5:38.57); and the 200 Free relay squad of Kaipainen, Baker, sophomore Ece Uyulur, and Hemmila (1:46.92).  Hemmila was also 2nd in the 200 Free (2:05.29).

Also putting points on the board for Huron were senior Ezgi Poyraz (5th in the 200 Free; 2:15.09; and 5th in the 100 Free; 1:05.66); A. Sakamoto (5th in the 200 IM; 2:32.72); Schneidewind (5th in the 50 Free; 29.28); Streeter (4th in the 100 Fly; 1:13.32; and 5th in the 100 Breast, 1:21.69); Uyulur (5th in the 100 Fly; 1:23.71); Pawlicki (4th in the 500 Free; 6:14.17); senior Margo Leone (5th place points in the 100 Back; 1:15.57).  Finally, Huron’s “A” (S. Sakamoto, Uyulur, Poyraz, and Hemmila) took 2nd in the 400 Free Relay.

Huron will host Saline next Thursday. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
