Swimming: Huron has a strong showing against a strong Skyline team

The Huron Women’s Swim/Dive team hosted Skyline last week and despite missing a few key athletes, Huron competed admirably, winning three events, and scoring 72 to Skyline’s 114.
Event winners included diver, junior Annie Costello (258.60), consistent and poised as usual, who added to her large collection of dual meet wins. Senior Sami Ruud was a strong second (235.10), and junior Julie Park (213.65), 3rd. Both also registered dual meet wins, contributing to their Regionals qualification totals.
Freshman Hannah Margolis (199.05), senior Anna Boerst (166.65) and sophomore Maggie Thomas (165.30), followed their teammates in non-scoring 4th, 5th, and 6th places, respectively.
Junior Annaliese Streeter won the 200 IM (1:1.40) easily, swimming a D1 cut time, and the 100 Breast (1:05.75), also a D1 time. Other point scorers for the Rats were sophomores Kathryn Hemmila (2:05.09), Ezgi Poyraz (2:10.19) and Felicia Sang (2:11.10), who went 3,4,5 in the 200 Free; Senior/captain Anna Leone (2:24.95), 4th in the 200 IM; freshman Catherine Li (27.32) and sophomore Emma Kaipainen(28.23), picking up 4th and 5th place points in the 50 Free; A. Leone (1:05.20), Sang (1:07:00) and junior Clara Bowman (1:07.95), 2nd, 4th and 5th in the 100 Fly; Hemmila (58.66) and junior Ella Szymansky (1:03.69), 3rd and 5th in the 100 Free; Poyraz (5:45.33), and sophomore Lydia Hargett (5:56.44), 3rd and 4th in the 500 Free; Bowman (1:05.68) and senior/captain Kristina Holcombe (1:14.57), 2nd and 5th in the 100 Back; and Kaipainen (1:15.18) and sophomore Ayaka Sakamoto (1:15.43), 4th and 5th in the 100 Breast.
Huron’s “A” relays were 2nd in all three contests with Bowman, Sakamoto, A. Leone and Streeter (1:58.12) in the 200 Medley relay; C. Li, Hemmila, Sakamoto, and Streeter (1:46.03) in the 200 Free, and Hemmila, Sang, Hargett, and Poyraz (4:06.53) finishing it off in the 400 Free Relay.
Huron will host two more home meets to round out the pre-Conference meet season: Thursday, October 17th vs. Saline, and Thursday, Oct. 24th, when they will celebrate Senior Night vs. Monroe.
