Swimming: Huron continues strong showing in diving in loss to top-ranked Pioneer

The Huron girls’ swimming and diving team faced an exceptional and No. 1 ranked Pioneer team on Thursday evening at the Hill Pool at Pioneer. The River Rats fell 136-50 despite putting up some strong times and another amazing night for the Huron divers.
Junior Annie Costello continued her winning streak as she took first with 268.70 points. Pioneer’s Alex Mercier (219.60) was second.
Also in diving, Huron junior Julie Park (195.85) was third and senior Sami Ruud (195.00) finished fourth for the River Rats. Senior Anna Boerst (152.60) and freshman Maggie Thomas (148.25) also sprung to impressive scores for Huron.
In the swimming events, Huron’s best showings were in the 100 back, with senior/captain Anna Leone finishing third (1:08.40) and freshman Catherine Li (1:08:92) just behind her in fourth; the 100 free, with junior Annaliese Streeter (54.42) in third and sophomore Zannah Baker (57.32) fifth; and the 50 free, with sophomore Ayaka Sakamoto (27.11) third and junior Ella Szmansky (28.75) fifth.
Sophomore Ezgi Poyraz had a strong third-place finish in the 500 (5:42.73), as did senior Liz LI (1:19.04), touching fourth in the 100 breast. Streeter (2:00:78) and Baker (2:06:12) picked up fourth and fifth place points in the 200 free.
Leone (2:23.40) was fourth in the 200 IM. Fellow sophomores Felicia Sang (1:07.96) and Kathryn Hemmila (1:08.11) earned fourth and fifth in the 100 fly.
Huron will play host to Adrian and Lincoln on Thursday, Oct. 3.
