Swimming: Eagles open season with easy victory over Lincoln
The Skyline boys’ swimming and diving team rang in the new 2022-23 season last week with a 143-38 win over Lincoln High School, which boasted a bevy of top five finishes and State Meet / Michigan Swim Coaches Association (MISCA) Meet qualifying times by the swimmers and divers!
The Eagles led off strong in the relays with a sweep of 1st, 2nd , and 3rd place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay, swum by (Kurniawan, Staunton, Caswell, Edlund) / (McKelvey, McCammon, Zillich, Thompson) / (Deyer, Nielsen, Jordan, Jenkins), respectively.
The team captured 1st and 2nd in the 400 Free Relay (Edlund, Staunton, McKelvey, Torres) / (Thompson, Caswell, Zillich, Xi) and 1st and 3rd in the 200 Free Relay (Xi, Kurniawan, Thai, Torres) / (Jordan, Hazzi, Nielsen, Barr).
In the individual events, top five finishes were turned in by Andrew-Vaughan (Diving-2nd), Barr (200 Free-2nd, 100 Free-4th), Caswell (50 Free-1st, 100 Free-1st), Deyer (100 Back-2nd), Edlund (500 Free-2nd), Gu (100 Back-4th), Hazzi (200 Free-5th), Jordan (100 Fly-3rd, 50 Free-5th), Knight (Diving-1st), Kurniawan (100 Fly-2nd, 50 Free-3rd), Mazza (100 Breast-4th), McCammon (100 Breast-1st), McKelvey (100 Back-1st, 200 IM-2nd), Nielsen (100 Breast-2nd, 200 IM-4th), Staunton (200 IM-1st, 100 Fly-1st), Thai (200 Free-3rd), Thompson (100 Free-3rd, 50 Free-4th), Torres (200 Free-1st, 500 Free-1st), Xi (50 Free-2nd, 100 Free-2nd), and Zillich (200 IM-3rd, 100 Fly-4th).
Skyline qualified for the MHSAA State Meet and/or MISCA Meet in nine events. The 200 Medley Relay qualified for States, as well as McKelvey in the 100 Back. In addition, MISCA qualifying swims included the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Free Relay, as well as the following individual events: 200 Free (Torres), 200 IM (Staunton, McKelvey), 50 Free (Caswell, Xi), 100 Fly (Staunton, Kurniawan), 100 Free (Caswell, Xi), 500 Free (Torres), and 100 Back (McKelvey).
This year’s captains are seniors Ben Edlund, Lewis McCammon, Jack Staunton, and Owen Torres.
