Swimming & Diving: Pioneer picks up two wins with one splash
The Pioneer boys’ swimming and diving team hosted a tri-meet on Tuesday night and swam away with two easy victories. Pioneer defeated Bedford 137-43 and topped Pinckney 132-51 in an SEC crossover.
Pioneer opened up by going one-two in the medley relay. The team of Jack Wilkening, Alex Farmer, Robert Yang and Gabriel Burks touched first in 1 minute, 36.07 seconds. The foursome of Caleb Rice, Gabriel Almeida, Justin Su and Alec Lipham took second in 1:42.18.
Ryan Hume won the 200 free in 1:45.97 with Lipham third (1:53.01) and Jensen Wood fourth (1:53.79) for the Pioneers.
Rice won the IM in 1:58.81 with Christopher Leuciuc third in 2:04.65.
The 50-free was a sprint to the finish. Pinckney’s Tyler Ray won in 21.24 with Wilkening second in 21.62 and Burks third in 21.94.
Pioneer’s Gabriel Mercier won diving with 226.85 points.
Yang swam second in the butterfly with a time of 52.38 and Su was fourth in 54.80.
The Pioneers took the top four spots in the 100 free with Hume (48.85), Lipham (50.12), Burks (50.29) and Farmer (51.26).
Wood was second in the 500 free in 4:56.17. Isaac Almeida was fourth (5:20.52) and Brighton Han fifth (5:31.14) for the Pioneers.
The Pioneer team of Rice, Farmer, Burks and Hume won the 200 free relay in 1:29.74 – a D-1 state cut time. The Pioneer team of Almeida, Luke Packard, Matthew DeBona and Wood was third in 1:37.31.
Wilkening led a sweep in the backstroke with a winning time of 52.60. Rice was second (57.04) and Su third (58.91).
Pioneer took the top four spots in the breaststroke with Farmer (1:02.48), Almeida (1:05.67), Young Jun (1:05.68) and Han (1:08.42).
The meet ended the same way it began – with Pioneer taking the top two spots. The team of Yang, Lipham, DeBona and Hume won the 400 free relay in 3:19.03. The team of Wilkening, Leuciuc, Wood and Su was a close second in 3:20.55.
