Soccer: Young Eagles come out flying with wins over Northville, Huron

The Skyline girls’ soccer team missed out on what appeared to be a promising season a year ago. Coach Chris Morgan’s roster was loaded with talent and experience, including seniors up and down the roster and the pitch.

But despite returning only three starters and eight players with varsity experience, the Eagles continue to land in the win column.

How can the program continue to be so successful every season? Good coaching? Good feeder programs? Dedicated players? Something in the water? Maybe all of the above.

The new-look Eagles opened the season with an impressive 2-0 win against an always strong Northville club on Saturday. On Wednesday, Skyline defeated an equally strong Huron side 2-1 in the first city rivalry game of the young season.

“We are essentially a new team but we are super excited with how the team is playing so far,” says Morgan. “We have only had five practices under our belt.”

Morgan was especially pleased with how his team played against the talented River Rats.

Skyline’s freshman keepers split the time in net against Huron. Sofia Nehro played the first half, and Ainsley Gardner played in the second half.

“It was a great test for us, especially being cross-town rivals,” Morgan said. “They have good pace up top, and they work hard front to back. Our goal (Wednesday) was to come out healthy, play better than we did against Northville, and manage our emotions. We accomplished all of those goals!

“We were sharper in the back and middle thirds, while we’d like to capitalize on a few more of our options. All in all, it is just awesome to be on the field with this group of players. It brings a sense of normalcy to us all.

Skyline plays Plymouth on Saturday.
