Soccer: Pioneer kicks two more games into the win column with victories over Huron and Monroe
The Pioneer soccer team went back-to-back in the win column with victories on consecutive days this week.
The Pioneers kicked things off with an impressive 3-1 win on Wednesday over a strong Huron team at Pioneer.
“(Huron Coach Luis Gomez) does a very good job of preparing his team so it takes some work to break them down,” said Pioneer Coach Jon Sundermann. “I was really happy with our effort. It was another true team win.”
Ben Matton served in a nice ball that ended up in front of the Huron goal. During a scramble the ball ended up in the Huron net for a 1-0 Pioneer advantage.
Jhustin Mitchenor scored Pioneer’s second goal of the game.
“He is a team guy through and through, and that is not taking anything away from anyone else,” Sundermann said. “He just is one of the kids that looks at you and says, “OK, I’ll do it,” whatever it is.”
Matton scored his first varsity goal of the season for Pioneer’s third of the night.
“Ben is a very dynamic player and has grown into a great leader,” Sundermann said.
James Simon and Andre Lee were among Pioneers with strong efforts against rival Huron.
On Thursday night, the Pioneers blanked Monroe 3-0.
“Always a tough opponent at their place, grass field, well coached, very tenacious and it seems like it’s always windy down there,” Sundermann said. “We were patiently aggressive and eventually were able to find a few goals.”
Garrett Stroud had the first goal for the visitors. Fabrizio converted a penalty for the second goal and Seth Neubauer clinched it with a long shot to make it 3-0.
Pioneer faces a huge test on Monday when they travel to Skyline to play the Eagles. It will be Senior Night for Skyline.
