Soccer: Huron opens season with 8-0 win over Ypsilanti

The Huron boys’ soccer team opened the 2020 season with a convincing 8-0 win over Ypsilanti in an SEC match played under perfect conditions on Tuesday at Huron HS. Huron Coach Luis Gomez has a young team with 18 out of the 22 Huron players playing in their first varsity game.

The River Rats were led by juniors Djimo Kouyate (D/M/F), Neeko Cho (M), Mundar Chen (D/M) and Mohammed Hammoud (D).

The first goal of the 2020 season was started when Kouyate received a through ball from freshman Will Cook-Diamond. Kouyate contributed a second goal shortly after to make it 2-0.

Cho got on the board with a strike to the bottom left corner for a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Nana Nkansah-Andoh closed out the first half by receiving a through ball and going around the goalkeeper to score his first varsity goal.

Huron led 4-0 at the break.

Junior Raymond Hashem scored his first varsity goal in the second half with a long range effort. Sophomore Brandon Garduño showed great skill when he was able  to dribble inside the box and draw a foul which resulted in a penalty kick. The penalty kick was converted by sophomore Rafay Chowdhury who also recorded his first varsity goal putting Huron up 6-0.

The night was ended when Kouyate scored two goals in the span of 4 minutes to end the game with the 8-0 mercy rule.

Junior Luke Hammond and senior Alex Perry combined to keep the clean sheet for the River Rats.

Huron will host Skyline on Thursday, Sept. 17. The JV match starts at 4 p.m. The varsity begins at 5:30 p.m.
