Soccer: Huron holds off Pioneer 2-1 – See WLAA Photogallery – 80 photos

On a breezy Thursday evening in Ann Arbor, two very strong soccer teams met on the pitch at Huron High School for an SEC clash. Both Huron and visiting Pioneer did a good job of keeping the ball on the turf and both played well despite the weather and it being an early season match.

When the “wind” had settled, the River Rats scored a 2-1 win over the Pioneers.
“We came close to scoring a number of times in the second half,” said Huron Caoch Murali Nair. “The wind made it difficult to play.”

Huron improved to 1-0-1 on the young season after a draw earlier in the week with Saline.

Pioneer falls to 2-2-2 on the season.

Jessica Clyde opened the scoring with 36:04 left in the first half to give Huron a 1-0 lead. The junior took the ball all the way to just before the end line before firing a low hard shot from the left side of the post that found the back of the net.

With 10:45 left in the opening half, Huron junior Danielle Harris scored to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Just before the first half ended, Pioneer scored a goal that was waived off because of offsides. It turned out to be a crucial call.

Huron led 2-0 at halftime.

The Pioneers scored in the second half on a penalty kick by senior Carly Baker.
