Soccer: Eagles draw with state-ranked Detroit Catholic Central, Saline

The Skyline boys’ soccer team has been playing well as the season moves along and proved things are heading in the right direction on Saturday. The Eagles played No. 1 ranked Detroit Catholic Central to a scoreless draw.

Skyline started strong and controlled possession for the first 10 minutes of the game, followed by a back-and-forth battle to end the half at 0-0. Both the Eagles and Shamrocks had chances to get on the board in the second half but couldn’t convert.

Skyline goalkeeper Max Adox stopped several attempts in the last 10 minutes of play to preserve the shutout.

On Wednesday, after a weather cancellation the night before, the Eagles were eager to host the Saline Hornets, who were ranked 13th in the state. Saline won the first meeting 1-0.

The Eagles had trouble maintaining possession in the first 20 minutes of the game, but did a much better job in the second 20 minutes of the first half. After putting a few quality shots together, Job Munongo found the back of the net in the 33rd minute of play. The first half ended with a 1-0 lead for Skyline.

In the second half, the Eagles and Hornets waged a defensive battle back and forth for 20 minutes. With just over 21 minutes left to play, the Hornets scored on a corner kick and then scored again less than 3 minutes later, resulting in a 2-1 lead.

But with just 1:24 left to play in the game, Munongo had a backwards header flick to Charlie Lacy, who scored to tie the game at 2-2. And that’s how it ended, in a 2-2 draw.

The Eagles play at Huron on Wednesday.
