Season Preview: Pioneer soccer hopes to continue to kick its way up the ladder
Jon Sundermann begins his second year with the Pioneer boys’ soccer team as the program continues kicking its way up the ladder to contending in the tough SEC Red Division. With teams like Skyline and Saline, that’s not an easy thing to accomplish but the Pioneers took a nice step in Sundermann’s rookie season last year.
“We need to continue to grow together as a team and program,” says Sundermann, a well-known and respected coach in the area. “We are looking for consistency of performance – especially in defensive transition and scoring goals.”
Returning to the Pioneer lineup this season is senior defender James Simon, senior midfielder Ben Matton and junior midfielder Andrew Lee.
Top newcomers to the varsity roster include senior keeper Caleb Shoup, junior forward Aaron Hsu and junior midfielder Jack Yerkes.
“We have some depth and technical ability,” says Sundermann. “We just need to improve our overall consistency and score some goals.”
Pioneer hosts Rochester Adams at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 22).
