Season Preview: Huron girls’ basketball team dribbles into new season with talent, experience
The Huron boys’ basketball team is going to garner plenty of attention this season but the girls’ team also has plenty of firepower returning and could ignite plenty of excitement in 2019-20.
Scott Hunter begins his second season with the River Rats with some key players back off last year’s 12-10 team that also went 8-4 in the SEC Red. The River Rats will be as good as it gets in the backcourt with guards who can score, pass and play aggressive defense.
Both Reeya Patel and Siena Smith were First Team All-SEC last year. Patel is quick and can make things happen by driving to the basket and dishing off or shooting – she is the perfect point guard and should have a big senior year.
Fellow senior Smith can also score, pass, rebound, defend and dive on the floor – yeah, one of those do-everything kind of players.
Jadyn Smith, Siena’s sister, and Alexa Lyon were both honorable mention All-SEC last year as juniors giving Hunter a great mix of talent and experience among the starting five.
Other returning players include senior shooting guard Mckenzie Maciejewski, senior small forward MiLisa Curtis and senior power forward Khady Ba.
New to the roster this include senior shooting guard Brooklynn Cooper, senior point guard Maureen Kengara, senior power forward Trinity Glaze, and junior small forward Onix Acosta.
“Our team strengths will be shooting and versatility,” Hunter said. “We have many players who are able to guard multiple positions. We need to work on rebounding and being physical at both ends.
“I expect us to be competitive.”
The River Rats host Muskegon HS at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
