Season Preview: Huron football hopes to win some games – and so much more

The past is right there for all to see when it comes to Huron football. The last win for the River Rats was Oct. 3, 2015 – four winless seasons have followed. But Coach Antaiwn Mack had nothing to do with any of those seasons and the players who have been on the team the last few years are more than ready to forget the past.

Huron is focusing on the present with the goal of creating success in the future.

And they don’t have to look far to see an example of how to turn the past into the postseason. SEC rival Dexter had gone four winless seasons before reaching the state playoffs for the first time in school history last season – so it can be done.

“The key to our success is continuing to stick together as a family, our approach and mentality play like there’s no tomorrow while playing discipline football,” says Mack, whose motto is “Chip the Paint.”

“Our goal is to win the state championship and touch as many lives as possible in a positive way. We want to help every senior get an opportunity to play college football if that’s what they want to do.”

Top returning players for the River Rats include senior RB Aaron Winston, Senior RB/LB Tyree Hill, junior WR/DC Jaylin Matthews and junior LB Brandon Rawls.

Top newcomers include freshman DB Torrence Greene.

“We have good overall team speed,” Mack says. “We need to be more consistent and stay healthy.” 

Huron opens the season at home against Ecorse on Friday.
