Profile: Pioneer junior Cole Tremewan is ready to take that final step
There is a ladder to the top of the state finals and Pioneer junior Cole Tremewan has one more step to take to reach the top. After years of hard work and dedication, he’s clearly ready to step out on the end of the board and make his move. And, really, it’s not a giant leap, but a small step.
Tremewan will head into this weekend’s Division 1 MHSAA State Finals as the favorite to finish first in diving. He racked up 470.20 points in the Regionals on March 5 to take first place overall.
Brighton’s Scott Scrivano was second with 451.10 in what appears to be a two-diver race to the top on Saturday at Oakland University. Northville’s Andy Maiz finished a distant third with 354.70 points.
Tremewan’s teammate Maxwell Rolla-Mullis was fifth with 315.90 points.
As a freshman, Tremewan placed fifth overall with 399.95 points. Skyline’s Henry Schirmer won with 503.85 points. Tremewan moved up to second last year as he finished with 428.45 points as Schirmer, in his final season, won again with 514.55.
There is only one individual goal left for Tremewan.
“My goal this year is to win the state meet,” he says. “I’m going to continue to practice as hard as I can this week so I can fine tune everything.”
In other words, he’s not taking anything for granted.
And neither are the Pioneers who head into the D-1 finals as one of the favorites to win it all.
“The personality of the team is very supportive and it is so much fun being a part of it,” says Tremewan, the son of Christy Summers and Doug Tremewan. “I always enjoy the team dynamics so that has been a highlight for me this year.”
He first became interested in swimming and diving when he started at Georgetown Country Club.
“I was around 6 and immediately took more of an interest in diving,” he says. “I also dive for Legacy for my club team where Peter (my high school coach) also coaches. I’ve been diving there for seven years and it has always been a mix of hard work and fun.”
After high school, Tremewan wants to get a business degree and dive in college.
But first he has one more step to take – and another season at Pioneer.
