Pioneer Theatre Guild presents “Peter and the Starcatcher” May 7-9
Pioneer Theatre Guild is proud to present the Tony-winning play, Peter and the Starcatcher!
The play has been pre-recorded and edited, and is available to view via online stream.
The play upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan boy becomes the legendary Peter Pan. A play by Rick Elice with music by Wayne Barker, based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Originally produced on Broadway by Nancy Nagel Gibbs, Greg Schaffert, Eva Price, Tom Smedes, and Disney Theatrical Productions.
PTG’s cast consists of 18 students from Pioneer High School, Community High School, and Skyline High School. The students have been rehearsing and filming the play on Zoom since mid-January. In addition, 15 crew members have helped with the concept, design, creation, and distribution of the props and costumes.
The show is directed by University of Michigan Musical Theater major, Sevon Askew:
“What made me excited about doing Peter and the Starcatcher in this virtual space is that the play is rooted in story theatre where an ensemble of actors come together to tell a story taking turns narrating and playing their characters. One thing we’ve missed over the last year as we’ve been forced away from each other is the art of coming together to tell stories. And even though our “coming together” has been confined to our computer screens, I, in my biased opinion, think we were able to capture the magic that comes from live storytelling. So, one of the biggest joys of my 2021 has been logging onto Zoom every week and getting to create this wonderful origin story of Peter Pan with 18 of the most dedicated students I’ve ever met. Overcoming the challenges of the Zoom space became easy with a fearless cast ready to journey to Neverland together from their bedrooms, kitchens, and living rooms.”
Pioneer senior, Miriam Wyllie-Scholz, plays the role of Boy/Peter:
“Working on a play virtually has been an interesting experience. None of us really knew what to expect going into it, and I’ve been continuously surprised and impressed with what is possible with a bit of creativity. It feels very special to be telling a story with characters that we are already familiar with from a different point in their journey. I’ve really enjoyed getting to work with people I’ve known for a while, as well as new people. In this format, you get to see a different side of people, even the ones you already knew. I’m very grateful for Sevon, he has done an incredible job of
guiding and supporting us through the whole process. Filming has been a lot of fun! Like any form of theater it comes with its own unique challenges (household noise, wifi problems, etc), but it’s been very rewarding as well.”
