A legend of soul in a benefit for the Breakfast at St. Andrews program
Mavis Staples has been an irresistible musical force for decades. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, and sang in Barack Obama’s White House. At a time when most artists begin to wind down, she is releasing some of her most important work, including three critically-acclaimed albums recorded with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, and “We Get By,” her latest collaboration with multi–Grammy winner Ben Harper. “I sing because I want to leave people feeling better than I found them,” Mavis says. “I want them to walk away with a positive message in their hearts, feeling stronger than they felt before. I’m singing to myself for those same reasons, too.” Mavis’s performance will mark the 11th time Acoustic Routes and The Ark, Ann Arbor’s world-renowned folk and roots music club, have worked together to raise money for the Breakfast at St. Andrew’s, which has served a free meal to anyone in need every day without fail since the summer of 1982.
