ICLEI Elects New Leadership Through Global Democratic Process
The leading network of local and regional governments, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, has announced its new leadership following a one-year global democratic election process. Positions in the ICLEI governance bodies have a three-year term, and newly elected leaders will meet for the first time at the ICLEI World Congress in April 2021, hosted by Malmö, Sweden. Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor was appointed as a special advisor to the Global Executive Committee on Climate Action.
ICLEI is a network of local and regional governments led by the ICLEI Council and Global Executive Committee (GexCom), two groups of local leaders elected by ICLEI members every three years. The ICLEI Council is formed by the nine regional executive committees (RexCom), elected by members in each ICLEI region. One representative from each RexCom is then elected as regional representative to the ICLEI (GexCom), along with portfolio holders who are elected to the GexCom by the members of the ICLEI Council based on their thematic expertise. The ICLEI GexCom and Council have the power to represent ICLEI on the global stage and steer the organization by setting ICLEI global strategy and policies.
“Climate change is the defining issue of our time and one that intersects with a multitude of other critical issues that society must address, such as systematic racism, poverty, food, housing insecurity and growing economic disparities,” said Mayor Christopher Taylor. “Ann Arbor’s A2Zero Carbon Neutrality Plan, born of incredible staff, community and scientific collaboration, looks to combat inequalities in our systems and advance climate solutions that are grounded in equity and justice, even as they reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the resilience of our community. I’m delighted to be selected to serve on the ICLEI GexCom, which will provide an opportunity for Ann Arbor to learn from peer cities that are serious about climate action while also sharing Ann Arbor success stories. This work is important as we do not have time to ‘re-create’ the wheel, and we must work together globally to share best practices and support the rapid scaling and transfer of climate action and zero-emission strategies.”

Elected representatives will spend their three-year term driving the network’s global sustainability agenda forward for local and regional governments worldwide.
The new ICLEI Council and GexCom include representatives from districts, cities, states and regions from 35 different countries with a combined population of over 65 million.
