Huron rower Adam Campain competing this month at World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo
Adam Campain, a recent graduate of Huron
High School and a member of the River Rats crew team, is heading to Tokyo
before he begins his college career at Cornell. Campain is one of 59 athletes to make the 2019 Under 19 National Team that will compete at the
2019 World Rowing Junior Championships Aug. 7-11 in Tokyo, Japan.
“Adam is a phenomenal athlete,” said Huron Coach
Mike Taft. “He always goes beyond what is ask of him, taking on extra
training to become stronger and faster. We are incredibly proud of him
and all that he has accomplished.”
The U.S. will have 14 crews competing at the five-day regatta. Events include
the men’s and women’s single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls, pair,
four, four with coxswain, and eight.
Three days of intense competition culminated in a win for Campain and his partner, David Edington of Portland, Oregon. Campain and Edington compete in the men’s pair category.
After graduating from Huron in June, Campain headed to California to train and compete for a spot on the US Rowing U19 National Team. Campain and Edington trained daily and put in a winning performance.
Campain caught the attention of Huron coaches when he pulled a sub-7-minute 2k his first time on an erg, and while wearing a pair of khaki shorts. While rowing for Huron, Campain trained two to three hours a day with his teammates, and attended development camps over the summers.
Following Toyko, Campain will be rowing for Cornell University, where he will be studying finance and economics. Cornell’s rowing team is one of the top rowing programs in the nation.
Last year, the U.S. led the medal table with seven at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic. The women’s four and men’s single sculls won gold, while the women’s pair, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight and women’s eight won silver. The women’s four with coxswain brought home a bronze medal.
The U.S. roster includes athletes from 15 states. California claims 11 athletes on the U19 roster, while Florida and New York each have eight.
Adam isn’t the only Campain with a promising rowing career. Haley Campain, 15, Adam’s sister, also rows for Huron. Campain and her teammates competed at this year’s Scholastic Rowing Association of America. Huron’s women’s four also qualified for a spot in the 2019 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
