Hockey: Skyline bounces back from loss to Chelsea with 6-2 win over Jackson

The Skyline Eagles hit the ice on Monday against Jackson and took home a 6-2 win.

The Eagles took charge in the first period with three goals: the first from Sei Nakamura, the second from freshman Max Stevens, recording his first point for the Eagles, and the third from senior Jamie Newton. Jackson got on the scoreboard in the second period, scoring twice in a five minute span to narrow the Eagles’ lead to 3-2, but the Eagles answered back with a power play goal from Nakamura to end the second period 4-2. The third remained scoreless until Newton put another in the net with 4 minutes remaining. AJ Schmunk sealed the victory with a goal one minute later to make it 6-2.

The Eagles hosted the Dexter Dreadnaughts on Wednesday in a high scoring game which saw many visits to the penalty box. Skyline fired the first shot when Newton scored, unassisted, two minutes into the game. Newton, assisted by sophomore Peter Shellhaas and senior Ryan Garrett, scored a power play goal eight minutes later to take the lead to 2-0. Dexter soon answered back, scoring with 5:04 remaining in the first, and the teams ended the period 2-1.

Things got chippy in the second period when both teams earned a combined nine penalties. Skyline scored first when junior AJ Schmunk, assisted by Newton and junior Jack Bazzani, lit the lamp to take a two point lead. Senior Nakamura found the net at 11:11 to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead, but Dexter wasn’t done and scored a minute later to narrow the gap. The Dexter team got called for six penalties in the period, including a five minute major, which gave the Eagles a 5 on 3 opportunity, but they weren’t able to convert on that and ended the period 4-2. The Eagles took back control in the third, scoring four more goals, from seniors Zack Schueler, Nakamura, Newton, and junior AJ Schmunk and only letting up one more, to end the game 8-3.

Unfortunately, the Eagles’ five game winning streak came to an end on Thursday night when they lost to the Chelsea Bulldogs 1-0. The lone point was a short handed Bulldog goal scored at 9:29 in the first. The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game, with Eagle goaltender Tommy Letke stopping multiple shots, but neither team managed to find the scoreboard and the Bulldogs took home the win.

The Eagles will host the Bedford Mules Wednesday at 6:30 pm and the Pinckney Pirates on Saturday at 7 pm.
