Golf: Skyline opens SEC season with wins over Chelsea, Jackson
The Skyline golf team opened the SEC season on Thursday and scored wins over both Chelsea and Jackson at Inverness Country Club under ideal weather. The Eagles shot a match-best score of 175 while Chelsea carded a 209 and Jackson had a 218.
Skyline’s Adie Maki returns for her senior year. Last year as a junior, Maki fired a 73 at the Division 1 State Finals to finish tied for second overall with Utica Eisenhower’s Ariel Chang and just three strokes back of individual champion Kate Brody of Grand Blanc.
Maki had a match-best 39 on Thursday to lead the Eagles. Junior Dylan Schueler had a brilliant round (see below) with her 41.
Rounding out the Skyline scorecard were senior Riya Patchava (47), sophomore Reva Patchava (48), senior Helen Kucinski (50) and senior Lia Tomilo (57).
“Though some girls struggled, we had a couple firsts and nice accomplishments,” said Skyline Coach Ashley Mantha. “The TEAM played well. Dylan not only had her first birdie ever, but had two of them and shot her lowest score ever.”
The Skyline JV team also took first place. The JV shot 204 to Chelsea’s 246. Jackson didn’t have enough players on their team to compete for a team score.
Senior Lucy Stoy carded a 48 to lead the way. Sophomore Ali O’Brien had a 51 followed by sophomore Lily Hescheles (52), junior Val Rutte (53), junior Julia Sitz (58) and junior Nina Bendiab (60).
