Golf Roundup: Skyline, Pioneer card plenty of success on the links
The Skyline varsity golf team played on an elite course and against a very competitive field of teams and picked the right time to card one of their best rounds of the season on Monday afternoon.
The Eagles fired their second lowest team score of the season to finish with a 363 at the very challenging Oak Pointe Country Club in Brighton.
Hartland’s A team won the six-team tournament with a team score of 330. Host Brighton was second with a 342, followed by Grosse Ile (346), Grosse Pointe South (352), Skyline (363) and Hartland’s B team (409).
“All of the teams are regulars at the state tournament so it was a very competitive field,” said Skyline Coach Ashley Mantha. “It was our first time this season where the entire team broke 100 and our second lowest team score of the season. And this is not an easy course to do it on. It was a beautiful day and course to play.”
Skyline’s Adie Maki fired a 77 and tied for second overall (75 was the low score of the day). Riya Patchava carded a 93, Grace Hescheles shot a 96, Alison Marshall had a 97 and Lia Tomilo carded a 97.
On Sept. 18, Skyline competed in an SEC Tournament hosted by Saline at Rustic Glen. The varsity team took second as Maki took first overall and the JV team finished first. Skyline fired a 367 to finish second to Pioneer (see below) who carded a 342. Saline was third (407) and Tecumseh fourth (422).
Maki, a junior, led the field with a 77. Riya Patchava carded a 91, Hescheles shot a 98, Marshall had a 101 and Reva Patchava shot a 105 for the Eagles.
Pioneer
The Pioneers fired a team score of 168 to win an SEC quad-meet at Sandy Creek to finish the conference schedule with an undefeated record. Monroe took second (197), Dexter was third (198) and Pinckney fourth (199) as just two strokes separated the final three teams.
Sophomore Mackenzie Rooney shot a 39 for low score of the day to lead Pioneer. All six players broke 50 in the dominating performance. Senior Amaya Melendez shot a 40; sophomore Alysa Zhu shot a 44; senior Jillian Giordano shot a 45; and freshman Alex Ellender and junior Hayley Marchand each shot a 48.
Dexter’s Olivia Naylor had a strong round for the Dreadnaughts. The junior shot a team-best round of 43.
Dexter had four players in the 50s: junior Hannah Finch (50), junior Clare McCormick (52), junior Gaby Matos (53) and senior Julianne Browning (59). Junior Camryn Chase carded a 62.
Pioneer took first place at the SEC Tournament hosted by Saline at Rustic Glen on Sept. 18. The Pioneers took four of the top six spots with Melendez second (79), Rooney third (86), Giordano fifth (87) and Ellender sixth (90). Marchand fired a 95 to place 10th.
