Golf: Eagles open season with first-place finish in 24-team tournament at Detroit GC
The Skyline boys’ golf team didn’t let a tough course, competitive field or a little rain get in the way of their race to the top spot at the Sentech Services Boys Varsity Golf Tournament on the South Course at the Detroit Golf Club. The Eagles fired a team-best 282 to finish first among the 24 teams at the tournament.
“We played through some rain but grinded through,” said Skyline Coach Ashley Mantha. “What a way to start off the season.”
The field included Brother Rice (second, 287), Warren DeLaSalle (third, 290), Novi (fourth, 294), Detroit Catholic Central (fifth, 296), Hartland (sixth, 302), Flint Powers Catholic (seventh, 303), Brighton (eighth, 308), Northville (ninth, 310) and Lake Orion (10th, 311).
The Eagles landed three players among the top 10 on the scorecard. Detroit County Day senior Scott Hanna fired a 66 for the top score on the day. Skyline sophomore Mitchell Stickland and freshman Ieuan Jones tied for second overall with Utica Ford’s Garrett Kuppler. The trio each fired a 68.
Skyline senior Vimal Alokam shot a 71 to tie for 10th place with three other golfers.
Senior Parker Ward fired a 75 and freshman Vibhave Alokam shot a 76 for the Eagles.
