Girls Water Polo: Eagles open season with victory over Pioneer

The Skyline girls’ water polo team started their season off strong with an 8-1 victory against Pioneer on Friday.

Freshmen Allie Deininger tallied 4 goals and 4 steals in her high school debut, and had help from senior captains Aly Guevara (2 goals, 2 steals) and Ella Enrique Shakespeare (1 goal, 1 assist, 1 steal). Senior Lauren Sloan also contributed one goal, 2 assists and 2 steals to the help bring the Eagles to victory.

“It was really exciting to watch them play again,” said Coach Rebecca Godek. “It has been almost two full years since I’ve seen these girls play together and all of the sudden my sophomores are seniors! We have a lot of rust to work off and a lot of work to do but these girls are hard workers and are very supportive of each other so I know we will get there quickly.”

Godek added that the best way to improve is to “keep playing so I am looking forward to the coming weeks where we start knocking a lot of games out.”

The Eagles play Grand Blanc at home on Thursday and then head to Saline for their district seeding game on Friday. They also travel to Grandville Saturday to face Lake Orion, East Grand Rapids, and Grandville.
