Girls Water Polo: Eagles land second at Districts to advance to Regionals

The Skyline girls’ water polo team had an exciting week of competition as they kicked off their postseason run with 2 victories over Dexter (13-2) and Saline (10-3) and fell to Huron in the district championship game 2-9.

Over the three games, scoring was led by senior Lauren Sloan with 7 goals (4 Saline, 3 Dexter) and senior co-captain Ella Enrique-Shakespeare with 6 goals (4 Dexter, 1 Saline, 1 Huron). On the defensive end, goalie Alia Tracy had a remarkable weekend tallying 45 blocks across the 3 games giving her a save percentage of 76%. Senior co-captain Aly Guevara led in steals with 8 (4 Saline, 3 Dexter, 1 Huron).

“Overall it was a great week,” said Coach Rebecca Godek. “I was especially happy about how we played Saline. We were 1-1 with them and had previously beaten them by one goal, so to win by 7 was exciting and I can see the improvement week to week which is exactly what I’m looking for.

“We are 0-4 against Huron and will likely see them next weekend at Regionals so I’m hoping we can tighten the gap there and have some momentum moving forward.”

The Eagles enter the Regional tournament this week. Play begins on Thursday  and their first matchup is against Grand Blanc at 7:30 pm hosted at Birmingham Seaholm. If they pull out a victory, they will advance to the semifinal game Saturday morning at 9 am hosted at the Skyline Bird Bath, and also earn a spot in the State Tournament June 4-5.
