Girls Water Polo: Eagles land in seventh place at state tournament
The Skyline girls’ water polo team concluded their season with a 7th place finish at the state tournament this past weekend. The Eagles fell to the #4 ranked Grandville in their first game 4-3, followed by another tough loss to Saline 3-2 and finished with a 13-3 win over Seaholm.
Scoring for the weekend was led by freshmen Allie Deininger who had 4 goals, followed by senior co-captain Ella Enrique-Shakespeare and sophomore Lauren MacNeil both with 3 goals. Defense was led by goalie Alia Tracy who tallied 32 total saves and co-captain Olivia Andrew-Vaughan with 6 steals.
Coach Rebecca Godek said “We had a tough first day. Falling to Grandville and Saline both by 1 was a big blow. We were right there the whole time with Grandville and our shots were just not falling for us. We had a hard time getting the energy up against Saline in our 2nd game and just didn’t have the fire I have seen from them before. Finishing 7th is still a great accomplishment for us though, in the beginning of the season I wasn’t even sure if we would make the tournament. Our final game was a great way to close our season. We had a solid win and had 7 different players who scored goals, everyone got to get in and play and it was a really fun game to watch. I am very proud of the work these girls put in and the progress they made over the last few months after over a full year not being able to play the game.”
