Girls Water Polo: Eagles clinch East Regional Championship
The Skyline girls’ water polo team clinched the East Regional Championship this weekend in exciting fashion, beating Huron 5-4. The road to the championship game included wins against Grand Blanc (16-4) and Seaholm (12-1). The matchup against Huron marked the 5th time the teams have played each other this season, the Rats having won all previous 4 games.
Senior Co-Captain Ella Enrique-Shakespeare led scoring for the tournament with 15 goals (9 Grand Blanc, 4 Seaholm, 2 Huron) followed by freshmen Allie Deininger with 8 goals (3 Grand Blanc, 3 Seaholm, 2 Huron). Defense was led by Junior goalie Alia Tracy with 32 saves, 21 of them being in the Huron game alone giving her an incredible 78% save percentage on the weekend.
Coach Rebecca Godek said “These girls earned this win. We have had a tough time with Huron all season, falling to 4 of 4 times by as many as 9 goals. Coming out with this win was huge for us, and I am so proud of how hard they fought….we got down quick 0-3 at the end of the first quarter and clawed our way back. Our defense was unstoppable and Alia played amazing in goal, Huron didn’t score at all the second half. We shocked a lot of people with this win and I’m excited to get back to the drawing board to prep for Grandville in two weeks.”
The Eagles have this weekend off for the Memorial Day holiday and next up for them is the state tournament in Grand Rapids June 4th and 5th. The first matchup will be on 6/4 against Grandville at 1pm at Hudsonville High School.
