Girls Track & Field: Huron, Pioneer both land among top five in the state

The local girls’ track and field teams competed in the MHSAA Division 1 State Championships in Rockford on Saturday and the local teams were very impressive on the day, landing two teams in the top five.

Detroit Renaissance crossed first with 80 points while Oak Park took second with 60 points. Huron was third with 55 points followed by Holland West Ottawa (47) and Pioneer (38).

Huron’s Mackenzie Robinson had a huge day for the River Rats. The junior was second in both the 100 meters (12.02) and the 200 meters (24.33). Pioneer junior Mahawa Kaba was 21^st in the 100 meters in 13.07. Huron senior Mya Georgiadis was 15^th in the 200 meters in 25.83.

In the 800 meters, Pioneer senior Sarah Forsyth was third in 2:11.81 and sophomore Sylvia Sanok Dufallo ran eighth in (2:16.05).

In the 1600 meters, Pioneer senior Cookie Baugh was fourth (4:51.89) and junior Emily Cooper ran ninth (4:56.00).

Huron senior Mya Georgiadis was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 14.89 and teammate Christabelle Obi was 10^th in the prelims in 15.52. Georgiadis also ran second in the 300 hurdles in 42.52 and Obi was 11th (46.32).

Huron’s team of Rachel Overgaard, Aliyah Ferguson, Jordan Douglas and Robinson finished second in the 4×100 relay in 47.90.

Huron’s 4×400 relay team of Robinson, Jada Wilson, Obi and Georgiadis finished in first place with a time of 3:52.81. Pioneer’s 4×400 relay team of Cooper, Sanok Dufallo, Baugh and Forsyth was third in 3:58.11.

Pioneer’s 4×800 relay team of Cooper, Sanok Dufallo, Baugh and Forsyth ran first in 8:55.58.

Huron freshman Cora Williams was second in the shot put (41-00.25).

Pioneer senior Gabriella Newman was first in the high jump (5-08) and Huron sophomore Alena Adams was 23^rd (4-11).
