Girls Basketball: Pioneers use strong defense to improve to 4-1 on the season

The Pioneer girls’ basketball team heads to the Holiday Break with a 4-1 record after a 34-21 win over Powers Catholic on Wednesday. It wasn’t exactly a stellar offensive performance by the Pioneers – they failed to score a point in the second quarter – but they turned solid defense into a victory.

Pioneer led 10-5 after the first quarter. After their goose egg in the second quarter, they trailed 11-10 at halftime. The Pioneers then held Powers Catholic scoreless in the third quarter and scored 13 points to take a 23-11 lead into the final quarter. Pioneer outscored PC 11-10 in the final quarter.

Lauren DeWolf and Alexis Clark each scored eight to lead the Pioneers. Brein Bogan had six points and Mya Hicks and Felicia Stewart each scored five.

The Pioneers return to action Dec. 30 against St. Ignace in the Motor City Roundball Classic at Westfield Prep in Redford. Tip-off is at 11 a.m.
