Girls Basketball: Half-court shot (see video) helps lead Irish over Lutheran North

The Father Gabriel Richard girls’ basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season and it’s a game that Lainey Garbarz won’t soon forget. Garbarz led the Fighting Irish with 14 points in a 45-32 win over Macomb Lutheran North on Saturday.

But what she will remember most was the three-pointer she knocked down from midcourt just before halftime (see video). The basket helped give the Fighting Irish a 22-18 halftime lead.

FGR outscored Lutheran North 7-5 in the third quarter and 16-9 in the fourth in the non-league game.

“We started well against their 2-3 zone and played a pretty clean first quarter,” said FGR Coach Tim Cain. “Lutheran North changed up and threw a few different presses in the 2nd and 3rd which seemed to pull us out of our comfort zone.  I think we settled down after halftime and got in the correct positions and stopped turning the ball over.”

The Irish were able to set up their half-court defense in the second half and held them to only three field goals the rest of the way.

FGR was just 9-23 from the free-throw line – something to work on this week.

“We are going to have to hit those when trying to close out games,” Cain says.

Senior Sophia Hogan had 12 points and senior Savannah Wing scored 11 in the win.

The Irish will host the same Lutheran North team at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
