Former college assistant at Valparaiso named new head coach at FGR
Father Gabriel Richard recently introduced Jon Robinson as the school’s new varsity head football coach. Robinson will lead the football program, effective immediately, and will also join the school’s faculty in the Physical Education Department and Learning Resource Center.
Robinson said he is excited to work with the FGR faculty and coaches and get to know the students in his different roles.
As the new football coach, Robinson is striving to build a competitive program based on integrity and character development. This philosophy led to success in the role he is leaving as Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Valparaiso University (Valpo).
With Robinson serving as linebackers coach, Valpo enjoyed its best defensive season in four decades in Spring 2021. Valpo held opponents to 283.3 yards per game, the program’s best total defense in the last 40 years. They also limited the opposition to 172.2 passing yards per game, the program’s best passing defense since 2008. In addition, the squad boasted its best rushing defense (111.2 yards per game) and scoring defense (18.7 points per game) since 1999.”
Robinson is no stranger to FGR as he previously recruited student-athletes to play football at the collegiate level. He has additional coaching experience as the Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Wayne State University, Graduate Assistant at Ball State University, and Graduate Assistant – Video Coordinator at Wayne State University. Before coaching, he was a defensive end on Wayne State University’s 2011 Division II National Runner-up football team.
Robinson has a Bachelor of Science in Education – Kinesiology (concentration in Pedagogy) and Master of Arts in Sports Administration (concentration in Professional Sports Administration) from Wayne State University. He is native to Michigan and is moving back home with his wife and two children.
The school invites all FGR football families and anyone interested in joining our football program to meet Coach Robinson at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 22 in the FGR Commons.
