Football: Local teams look to bounce back against tough foes in week two
The three local Ann Arbor football teams will look to get back on track after a tough opening week – and it’s not going to be any easier in week two.
Huron opened its season on the big stage – the Big House – with a disappointing 32-2 loss to Lapeer. The River Rats, coming off two consecutive playoff appearances, had turnover issues all game that proved costly in the loss to the Lightning in the Battle at the Big House on Friday.
This week could prove an even bigger assignment as the River Rats who host Saline on Thursday with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Hornets, always one of the best teams in the state, opened their season with a 24-15 win over Hudsonville.
Skyline dropped its season opener 28-13 on the road at Pinckney. The Eagles soared back into the game in the second half, but a slow start and some costly mistakes were too much to overcome. Carson Mitchell and Evan Rothenberg recorded the two scores for the Eagles. Sophomore Traci Lincoln impressed on defense in his first varsity game.
Skyline faces an even tougher challenge on Friday when the Eagles land in Dexter to face the Dreadnaughts. Led by Michigan commit Cole Cabana, Dexter’s offense is going to prove a challenge for every team in the SEC this season. The Dreads opened the year with a convincing 41-21 win over Grosse Pointe South at Wayne State University.
Dexter defeated Skyline 42-6 last year.
Pioneer, under first-year coach Calvin Griggs, lost on the road at Anchor Bay, 42-7. The Pioneers have to pack their bags again in week two and head down to Bedford to face the Kicking Mules in an SEC opener. Bedford, a perennial playoff team, opened with a 42-21 win over Utica Ford in week one.
Worth noting: Skyline’s JV team defeated Pinckney when Wyatt McNamara caught a game-winning 2-point conversion from Noah Scherer in the final 2 minutes of the game. Ayden Schlecht scored three touchdowns for the young Eagles and Emmanuel Morrell-Weston added another. Kameron Edmonds was a stand out on defense.
